These terms govern your use of the GitDesktop application and the gitdesktop.app website (“GitDesktop”). By downloading or using GitDesktop, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, don’t use it. This is not legal advice.

The software license

GitDesktop is open-source software licensed under the Apache License 2.0. That license — not this page — governs your rights to use, copy, modify, and distribute the software, and it controls in any conflict with these terms. A copy ships with the app and is in the project repository.

No warranty

GitDesktop is provided “as is,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. You use it at your own risk. It runs Git and other commands against your repositories, so keep backups of important work.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the authors and contributors are not liable for any damages — including lost data, lost commits, or lost profits — arising from your use of GitDesktop, even if advised of the possibility.

Third-party services

GitDesktop works with services you choose, under their own terms, not ours:

• GitHub — accessed through the GitHub CLI (gh) with your own credentials, subject to GitHub’s Terms of Service.
• AI providers — if you enable AI features, your requests go to the provider you configure (such as Anthropic, OpenAI, or OpenRouter) under their terms, or stay local with Ollama / CLI agents.

You are responsible for complying with those services’ terms and for any API costs you incur.

Acceptable use

Don’t use GitDesktop to break the law, or to violate the terms of GitHub or any provider you connect it to.

Updates and changes

GitDesktop can update itself to newer signed releases. We may revise these terms; material changes will be noted in the release notes or in-app. Continued use after a change means you accept it.
